Born in Bandung, Indonesia in 1973. Obtained his BFA from Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia in 1998. Winner of the Juror's Choice, The Phillip Morris ASEAN Art Awards VI (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) in 1999. Artist-in-residenceat Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands from 2001 to 2002. Working at Bandung Center for New Media Arts since 2001. Lives and works in Bandung, Indonesia.

During residency
Hartanto interviewed survivors of World War II to illustrate personal and collective memories of scars and create the installation Cold Memory. Also, made drawings of young local people posing with wooden swords, in the same way as the character in his favorite manga.
