Born in Kobe, Hyogo in 1969. Obtained BFA from San Francisco Art Institute, California, USA in 1992. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

During residency
Shimabuku worked on projects so that he could learn about the unfamiliar town: invited local residents to his "Slide Talk Tour," and went around town on bicycle for "In Search of Deer," among others. Meaning of communication was explored during the process of these projects.

27 participants, including 9 students of Atago Junior High School,Moriya Town SHIMABUKU took the participants to places where they identified as 'eyes' or 'tails' of the town, and placed 'eye' images at each location.
