Kang Ya-chu

For the residence in ARCUS

Moriya is similar to Tainan where I spent my college life. I bike to the studio everyday like that time. I enjoy the life here having time to concentrate on my work in quiet environment.
Moriya has a lot of nature, but I also noticed that there are a number of new houses constructed. Urbanization which deeply relates to the global economy influences this city too. I am interested in the conflict between traditional life and modern urbanized culture in such city.
At ARCUS, I would like to research Japan as different environment, and see how people and objects in daily life relate together, and explore what is common and what is different from those of Taiwan. Especially, I am focusing on the relationship between body and costume, or people’s approach toward those covering materials such as clothes, envelopes, or wrapping paper. I will continue work with these materials in ARCUS.
During my stay in Moriya, I would like to not only show my work or invite people to my studio, but also communicate with the people in daily life.

Kang has been interested in Japanese culture and history, as well as those influences on the local people and will research on those cultures. Especially, she is focusing on textiles, dyeing and Ukiyoe and will visit those factories. Based on the research, she will create the work which features the relationship between Japanese traditional costume and human boy. Also, she is planning to collect Japanese daily things for creating her work. Kan’s works will be open to public during the 23rd Japanese Cultural Festival as a solo exhibition and workshop.
